About Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of physical relaxation, where the subconscious mind is highly alert and receptive.  It is often called Guided Imagery, Guided Visualization and sometimes Guided Meditation.

All hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis.  The role of your hypnotist is to guide you into the proper state, so that you can make the changes you desire.  In this state, the conscious mind is distracted and the subconscious mind is at the forefront listening to the suggestions given.

These suggestions are focused on a specific intention, such as eliminating a habit, reducing unnecessary worry, or perhaps, to simply relax and let go of any unwanted tension.  Hypnosis can help with an innumerable amount of things, not the least of which is to stop smoking, build confidence, increase motivation and to discover your potential.  Many high performing business executives, athletes, and entertainment professionals use hypnosis to enhance their natural abilities. Yes, you can to, can you not?

Isn’t it like Mind Control?

No way!  You are in complete control.  You will hear all I say and recall all that occurs.  At any point in time, if I said anything that you did not agree with or which offended you, you would reject that suggestion and emerge yourself from hypnosis.

With that said, I am also not a mind reader.  I cannot know specifically with 100% accuracy which suggestions are going to make your heart sing, I’d have to have super powers to make that happen, and it is not necessary for you to like 100% of the suggestions, because enough of the suggestion will resonate with you and they will be the suggestions that are right for you.

What about those stage shows?

Hypnosis for therapeutic purposes is not like the hypnosis for entertainment.  Yes, those participants are in a state of hypnosis.  It is not fake.  Each person on stage wants to be the center of attention and they participate to the degree that fits what is comfortable to them.

Perhaps you noticed, the crowd on the stage starts large and as the show progresses there are fewer and fewer “stars”.  As the stages of the show progress, when a participant is no longer in agreement with the suggestion, they emerge.  The hypnotist recognizes this and they go back to their seat.  It is only fun when everyone has fun!

This is not the type of hypnosis we work with at Marina Charron Hypnosis or A New You Center For Hypnosis, which is where I see clients.

What does it feel like to be hypnotized?

Many say hypnosis feels like a comfortable daydream, a pleasant state of relaxation.  Some people feel heavy like they are sinking into the chair, others feel light, like they are floating on a cloud.  You might feel warm or you might feel cool.  It is not uncommon to feel numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, feet, fingers or toes.  You may notice that your mouth waters more and you need to swallow frequently.  Your eyes may become so relaxed the eyelids feel heavy, like you couldn’t open them if you tried.  At any point in time, you could shake off any of these sensations, if you wanted to, because you are in control, but most don’t want to, because it feels so good.

Each time you experience hypnosis, it might feel a little different.  Each time is a wonderful experience that is perfect and right for you.  When you emerge from hypnosis, you will wake feeling refreshed and energized, better than when you began.

Is it Safe?

Absolutely!  Hypnosis for therapeutic purposes has been approved by the American Medical Association, British Medical Association and the Catholic Church since the 1950’s.  It is safe, enjoyable, and extremely effective for eliminating unwanted habits and behaviors.

Disclaimer: Hypnosis for therapeutic purposes is not meant to replace, treat or diagnose any medical conditions.  Nor is it meant to replace conventional medical treatment.  Persons with certain medical conditions may be required to obtain a medical referral from a qualified medical professional before being accepted as a hypnosis client.
